Fibrin thrombi, a cause of clindamycin-associated colitis?
Rectal biopsies from five patients with clindamycin-associated colitis were studied with the intention of identifying fibrin thrombi in capillaries. Capillary thrombosis was present in all five cases, three with pseudomembranous colitis and two with non-specific colitis. The significance of capillary thrombosis and its relationship to other ischaemic lesions of the gut are discussed.

متن کاملMucosal damage mediated by clostridial toxin in experimental clindamycin-associated colitis.
A toxin produced by Clostridium difficile has been implicated in the pathogenesis of antibiotic-associated colitis in humans and experimental animals. This study was undertaken in order to define the sequential evolution of caecal mucosal lesions in the hamster and to relate those lesions directly to the clostridial toxin. Sterile filtrates from a culture of C. difficile and from caecal content...
متن کاملCecal toxin(s) from guinea pigs with clindamycin-associated colitis, neutralized by Clostridium sordellii antitoxin.
The cecal contents of guinea pigs with clindamycin-associated colitis contained a heat-labile toxin. This toxin was lethal for guinea pigs and mice, produced vascular permeability in the skin of rabbits, and was cytotoxic in tissue culture. The lethality in mice, vascular permeability in rabbit skin, and cytotoxicity in tissue culture monolayers were neutralized by Clostridium sordellii antitoxin.
متن کاملClindamycin-associated colitis due to a toxin-producing species of Clostridium in hamsters.
Clindamycin-associated enterocolitis in hamsters was studied to detect and characterize a transmissible agent. It was found that the disease could be transferred by cecal contents and filtrates of cecal contents (pore size of filter, 0.02 micron) obtained from animals after administration of clindamycin. Subsequent work showed that enterocolitis could be produced with broth cultures of a specie...
